HISTORY
Burlingame, Kansas, located in Osage County, has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. The community was established in support of a "Free State" Kansas, and its importance as an anti-slavery stronghold was so great that pro-slavery forces built a fort there in 1862. Burlingame held significant importance as a supply and blacksmithing stop for travelers heading west on the Santa Fe Trail, second only to Council Grove. The city's history is commemorated at the Burlingame Schuyler Museum, which features exhibits reflecting the community's past, including a fire station display. Visitors can also stroll down the brick main street, originally designed to accommodate oxen teams. Today, Burlingame is a city with a population of 971 as of the 2020 census.
